Running Toward the Deadline: CMG Helps Deliver On Boston

Boston and running are basically inseparable. Every April, the city turns into the center of the running world during the Boston Marathon — and this year On opened its first Boston store just days before race week.

CMG Construction Services supported the delivery of On Boston, a 2,800-square-foot retail space on Newbury Street in Back Bay. The store opened April 15, 2026, right ahead of the 130th Boston Marathon on April 20.

The timing mattered. The goal was to have the space ready not just for opening day, but for the surge of runners, fans, and visitors coming into the city for marathon week.

A retail build with a fixed deadline

Like most retail projects in Boston, the job required coordination with local permitting, vendors, and a tight construction schedule. CMG worked alongside Russco Construction and expeditor Jack Moriarity to keep things moving and handle the usual back-and-forth that comes with a city build.

The store itself was highly customized, which meant constant coordination between design, construction, and brand teams to keep everything aligned.

A mid-project change

Partway through the build, the project hit a major design update from the global team. That meant reworking parts of the permit set and re-aligning several scopes midstream.

It added complexity and risk to the schedule, but the team worked through it quickly and kept the project on track without pushing the opening.

Built for the brand and the moment

The On Boston store was designed as a community-focused space tied to movement, local runs, and connection — not just a retail location, but a place for the brand to show up in the city.

CMG’s role was making sure that vision actually opened on time and was ready for one of the busiest weeks in Boston.

Just before Marathon Monday, the doors opened on Newbury Street.
